A St. Louis area police officer was shot Friday morning during a traffic stop, according to local news.

Fox2Now.com reports the suspect, described as a “tall, thin African-American male,” allegedly shot a Ballwin Police Department officer in the neck around 11am.

The unidentified male officer is in “critical, but stable” condition, and is currently “fighting for his life,” Ballwin Chief Kevin Scott said at a press conference today.

“A suspect was reported to be in custody after a foot chase in the area of Burgundy Lane in Manchester, several miles northeast of the shooting scene,” reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“As the officer went back to his car, the driver got out, ‘advanced quickly’ and fired three shots at the officer, police said,” the Dispatch notes.

Commenting to KMOX reporter Kevin Killeen about the officer’s state of health, one source said, “It’s not good.”

A motive has not yet been revealed and the suspect has not yet been identified.

The shooting follows a massacre overnight in Dallas, Texas, which left five police officers dead.

In a separate incident, a suspect in Roswell, Georgia, was apprehended Friday after shooting at police from a moving vehicle.
