In a statement provided to The Washington Times, a Bilderberg “spokesman” has claimed that the group is happy that the public is interested in its activities – a suggestion that flies in the face of the huge security operation surrounding the meeting and and total secrecy in which its dignitaries operate.

“While we understand and generally welcome the general interest in the conference, we simply cannot provide the levels of access or transparency that certain individuals or groups would like to see,” the anonymous spokesman writes in an email.

“To encourage the highest level of openness and dialogue among the participants, and to keep the private character of the meetings, all participants respect the Chatham House Rule.” the statement also notes.

The idea that Bilderberg welcomes any kind of interest in its activities is laughable when one takes a brief look at the effort the group has gone to this year in Austria to hide away from the public eye.

The Interalpen Hotel is set half way up a secluded mountain in the Alps. Over 2000 police officers have erected 6 miles of security checkpoints around the venue, and have declared the roads and trails all around the hotel a no-go zone, with the threat of prison or hefty fines for anyone found roaming around.

Unknowing hikers are being aggressively harassed:

Capturing video and audio within the seclusion zone has been prohibited, and a giant stingray type array has been constructed to monitor and jam digital communications.

The few reporters that are in attendance have been shaken out of their beds in nearby hotels in the middle of the night to be interrogated, and police are keeping mugshots and copies of their passports on a suspect board at their HQ close to the venue.

Special ops anti-terror police called COBRA are stationed on the roof of the hotel and in surrounding areas, staking out the scene in armoured tank like vehicles, despite the fact that only a few bloggers and curious reporters are present.

And for good measure, the Kronen-Zeitung tabloid cited the military as saying a “special low-altitude radar is in position and Kiowa helicopters armed with machine guns are carrying out patrols”.

This hardly seems like a group that is welcoming any kind of attention, and is such a level of security really needed for what the anonymous Bilderberg spokesman claims is just upscale schmoozing?

“There is no desired outcome, no minutes are taken, and no report is written,” he claims. “Furthermore, no resolutions are proposed, no votes are taken, and no policy statements are issued. The conference serves one main goal: to foster discussions on predefined topics. Bilderberg is about gaining insights, fostering understanding and facilitating exchanges of views about the major issues facing the world. With this in mind, the main aim is to broaden the participants’ range of viewpoints, to gain insights and exchange views.”

That is, if your viewpoints are shared by Nazi Bilderberg founder Prince Bernhard and war criminals like Henry Kissinger.

Meanwhile, Gary Schmitt, a top security analyst at the American Enterprise Institute and former foreign intelligence adviser under President Reagan told The Times that the meeting used to be unique, but is now just one of many confabs. “They enjoy being thought of as being ‘elite.’ But nothing comes out of it.” Schmitt claims.

“You only have to go to one or two of these to realize the only reason you’re there is to enjoy a beer or two.” he adds.

Yeah, who doesn’t like a refreshing beer after orchestrating oil shortages, or helping create a European common market and a single European currency.

“The pioneering meeting grew out of the concern expressed by leading citizens on both sides of the Atlantic that western Europe and North America were not working together as closely as they should on issues of common interest,” the anonymous spokesman’s statement also notes.

The question is whose common interest would that be?
