Former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner began serving his 21-month sentence at a federal prison in Massachusetts Monday for sending sexually explicit content to a minor.

Weiner, who plead guilty to one count of the transfer of obscene materials to a 15-year-old girl earlier this year, will also pay a $10,000 fine, be subject to online monitoring and enroll in a sex-offender treatment program upon his release.

“This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment,” Judge Denise Cote of the Southern District of New York said at Weiner’s sentencing.

The disgraced lawmaker was involved in a similar sexting scandal in 2013 in which he used the now infamous pseudonym “Carlos Danger.” The incident ended Weiner’s attempted run for New York City mayor.

Weiner had also previously resigned from Congress in 2011 after it was learned he had sent lewd photos to numerous women.

News of the 53-year-old’s prison term comes amid a deluge of other scandals involving powerful figures, many in Hollywood, and sexual misconduct.
