WikiLeaks released Monday more than half a million U.S. diplomatic cables from the year 1979.
“If any year could be said to be the ‘year zero’ of our modern era, 1979 is it,” WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said in a press release.

“In the Middle East, the Iranian revolution, the Saudi Islamic uprising and the Egypt-Israel Camp David Accords led not only to the present regional power dynamic but decisively changed the relationship between oil, militant Islam and the world,” Assange added.
The total number of documents in the WikiLeaks’ diplomatic cable collection is now 3.3 million, with the addition of these new 531,525 cables.
