According to a new research, Americans throw away half of their total food produce, which causes heavy damage to the environment in addition to deepening hunger and poverty. The fruits and vegetables that fall short of “unrealistic and unyielding” cosmetic standards are either left in the fields to rot or are hauled directly to landfill sites.
Retailers, who seek “blemish-free” produce, reject high-value and nutritious items, which eventually results in the wastage of about 60m tons of produce worth about $160bn every year, writes the Guardian.
About eight percent of global climate pollution is caused by food wastes. With the awareness that a reduction in food wastage is necessary to fight hunger and climate change, the Obama administration and the U.N. pledged to halve the avoidable food losses by 2030.
