George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder in 2013, says Obama is responsible for creating racial tension in the Trayvon Martin case.

In a video posted on his lawyer’s website, Zimmerman said Obama is guilty of “dereliction of duty” and responsible for “pitting Americans against each other solely based on race.”

When asked by the lawyer, Howard Iken, who brought the most unfairness to the case, Zimmerman said: “By far, the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama.”

In addition, Zimmerman said the Justice Department ignored threats made against him. “They had various numerous examples of bounties place on my head, credible threats placed against myself and my family,” but “the President and the Attorney General and the federal government declined to do anything about it.”

Obama went out of his way to make personal remarks about the case. “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago,” he told White House reporters in July, 2013. He linked the self defense case to racism and said “there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws.”

“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Obama said during the case. “I think (Trayvon’s parents) are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened.”

Following the remarks, the Justice Department turned the case into a major civil rights battle with opportunists like the Rev. Al Sharpton grabbing the limelight. The Chicago Tribune noted that the case had drawn in numerous politicians and celebrities, many complaining that “the wheels of justice are moving too slowly” and that the suspect in the case should be immediately arrested and locked up.

On February 24 the Justice Department closed its civil rights investigation into the shooting of Martin. It did not file hate crime charges against him.
