In reality Sweetie is a highly sophisticated computer-generated animated persona used by international children’s rights group Terre des Hommes to unmask 1,000 alleged paedophiles willing to pay the child to engage in sexual acts in front of her webcam.
Within the ten week operation, over 20,000 predators approached Sweetie to ask for webcam sex performances. Her video chat partners were in fact communicating with a team in a warehouse in Amsterdam, who were recording everything. Whilst they chatted to the ‘girl’, researchers used social media to gather information as to the identity of the abusers. The group said the 999 men and one woman, from 71 countries worldwide, included fathers, musicians and architects, whose details will be handed to Interpol. They have also uploaded a video to Youtube explaining the process.
Hans Guyt, Terre des Hommes director of projects, said intervention was required before the “sinister phenomenon” of webcam sex shows runs out of control. He said sex tourists in Southeast Asia were increasingly exploiting children from their own homes due to the rise in high speed internet connections.
