The White House said Tuesday it’s confident the U.S. military will be able to end its combat mission in Iraq on schedule despite a powerful suicide bombing in Baghdad that killed 61 people.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Seattle from California, said the U.S. is confident the U.S. military’s combat mission will end on schedule at the end of the month.

He also said that the country is moving in the right direction.

“There are obviously still people who want to de-rail the advancement that the Iraqi people have made towards Democracy,” Burton said. “But [the Iraqi people] are firmly on track and we’re confident that we’re moving toward the end of our combat mission in Iraq.”
