Fits long pattern of disrespect towards nation’s founding document

Numerous publications ridiculed the magazine over their “mistake,” but was the error simply an editorial oversight, or was it intended to fit a long pattern of confusion over the nation’s founding document?

Although the 227-year-old charter outlines and enumerates various God-given rights, in the past few years the Constitution has come to be treated with general disregard. Many, including politicians who hold high office, have gone to great lengths to find loopholes around, and indeed to infringe on, amendments written to protect the populace from the threats posed by a massive federal government.

The fact that America’s central founding document is more and more being questioned, and that many in power are still confused by the document that secures our freedom should alarm Americans.

Congresswoman Thinks Constitution is 400 Years Old

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) showcased her ignorance for the Founding Fathers’ pièce de résistance on the House floor last month when she erroneously claimed the nation had operated under the Constitution for the past 400 years, basically since the pilgrims came ashore.

On the other hand, Rep. Lee did voice her opinion in 2011 that repealing Obamacare would be a constitutional violation.

In February, U.S. District Court Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen confused the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution in a court ruling which overturned Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriages when, in her opinion, she wrote: “Our Constitution declares that ‘all men’ are created equal. Surely this means all of us.”

House Minority Leader Confuses Declaration with Constitution

At a Center for American Progress convention last September, US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) perpetrated the same egregious error during a speech on women’s rights when she stated the Constitution “said the truths that are self-evident, that every man and woman, that men and women were created equal and that we must go forward in recognition of that.”

Back in 2010, Pelosi was also dumbfounded when a CNN reporter questioned the constitutionality of Obamacare’s individual mandate. “Madam Speaker, where specifically does the Constitution grant Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate?” the reporter asked, to which Pelosi responded: “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

House Speaker Confuses Declaration with Constitution

Even the current Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH), is clueless about the Constitution. In the above video shot in 2009, he also confused the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence.

For its July 4, 2011 issue, Time magazine deemed it appropriate to publish a cover story complete with an image of the Constitution in shreds, asking, “Does it still matter?”

Obama Doesn’t “even have to get to the constitutional question”

Many will remember President Obama’s arrogant dismissal of congressional criticism over his undeclared war on Libya. “I don’t even have to get to the Constitutional question,” the president stated, leading then-Congressman Ron Paul to label his comment “A horrible statement.”

“You take an oath of office to obey the Constitution… the Constitution is very clear, you don’t go to war without a declaration,” said Paul.

And most recently, Obama illustrated his disregard for the rule of law and balance of powers when he stated he could use executive orders to override a stalled Congress. “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone, and I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions..,” he said in regards to moving forward an education bill.

According to the Boston Globe, Rolling Stone spokeswoman Melissa Bruno joked that the “Declaration of the Independence is on the other side of Louis-Dreyfus’ body, but they couldn’t fit in the signatures.”

Is this simply a case of politicians and the media simply being air-headed, bumbling morons? Or is all of this part of an orchestrated propaganda campaign being waged against the Constitution to undermine its authority?

The more the document is treated as irrelevant, outdated, outmoded or antiquated by media and politicians, the more the notion that it is irrelevant is embedded and solidified in the minds of the public.
