House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Thursday said she would try to pass the Afghanistan war spending bill before the July recess, a piece of legislation that may be split into two to ease passage.

The California Democrat told reporters that “it would be important” for the bill to pass before the body breaks up at the end of next week.

Pelosi also expressed doubt that the recent change in command would adversely affect the supplemental spending bill’s passage.

“The president is the commander in chief, and we all stand by him in the decision that he made in terms of who would be in command in Afghanistan,” she said. “So we’ve trusted him before, we trust him now; its just a question of where people stand on our involvement in Afghanistan.”
