Russian President Vladimir Putin began the new year with a visit to the southern Russian city of Volgograd, which is reeling from two suicide bombings that killed 34 people earlier in the week. As the city observed the first of three days of mourning, Putin met with local officials to discuss public security and anti-terrorism measures. He also laid flowers for the dead and visited some of the dozens of victims in hospital.
Two separate suicide bombings ripped through the city’s railway terminal on Sunday and a trolleybus on Monday, killing a total of 34 people. Another attack by a female suicide bomber on a commuter bus in Volgograd in October killed six people and injured 37.
Putin immediately ordered national agencies to beef up security in the Volgograd region and across Russia.
