In comments during an interview Thursday, GOP nominee Donald Trump said he was ‘proud’ of the fact that he was a major part of the movement that force President Obama to make public his birth certificate.

Following a speech in New Hampshire, Trump was asked by NH1’s Paul Steinhauser if he still felt ‘proud’ of his role in the so called birther movement.

“Well I’m the one that got him to put up his birth certificate, “Trump noted.

“Hillary Clinton was unable to get there and I will tell you she tried. And you look at her campaign and everybody knows it happened,” Trump continued.

“I would say that pretty much everybody agrees with me, but she tried and she was unable to do it and I tried and I was able to do it, so I’m very proud of that.” the GOP nominee stated.

Trump expressed no regret for pushing for the birth certificate to be released, despite the fact that earlier this month he declared the matter to be settled.

During a press conference Trump stated that he now believes Obama was born in the US.

Trump noted that Clinton was the one who stated the so called birther movement, while she was running against Obama in 2008, and that he “finished it” by pressuring Obama to release the document.

The Clinton campaign has said it is “absurd” to suggest Hillary pushed the birth certificate issue. However, there is documented evidence within mainstream news coverage that Hillary, her campaign, and her supporters all pushed the issue from as early as 2007.

Democrats continue to attack Trump for his role in the birther movement.

This week during a speech, Michelle Obama on Wednesday slammed Trump on the subject, saying Trump’s claims were deliberately designed to undermine Obama’s presidency and “cannot be blamed on others or swept under the rug by an insincere sentence uttered at a press conference.”

“I think Barack has answered these questions with the example he’s set and the dignity he’s shown by going high when they go low.” the president’s wife claimed.
