Libertarian icon Ron Paul declared Tuesday that he may be persuaded to endorse Donald Trump, but only “if he argued for the free market.”

Fans of both Trump and Paul shouldn’t hold their breath though, for Paul was very much speaking in a theoretical sense.

“But this is jokingly,” Paul said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“Most people have rolled over and said, ‘Yeah, we complained two months ago about tariffs, but he probably wasn’t serious about it.’ We don’t know what he’s serious about. Now, I think a tariff war would be horrible right now.” Paul explained, expressing disagreement with Trump’s wish to see a 45 percent tariff on Chinese goods.

Paul, who ran for President three times during his career, also hit out at Trump’s proposals on border security.

While he said he agrees that protecting the border is an important issue, Paul noted “This idea of building the China Wall on our southern border and making Mexico pay for it, I don’t understand how people say ‘that’s a good idea,’ and that’s his rallying cry.”

“I find that a little bit silly,” the former Texas congressman added.

Paul did say, however, that he agreed with Trump that undocumented immigrants coming in to the US illegally are in many cases treated better than some veterans.

Speaking on the Alex Jones show last week, Ron Paul said he was “very hesitant” to express any support for Trump, fearing that Trump is “too all over the place” in his policies and that he could turn out to be “the champion of the executive order” because he is used to being authoritarian in the business world.

“What he says one day is something. The next day sometimes he flip flops in one day… what he has said over the years. So I have no idea what he believes in.” said Paul.

Despite their obvious differences of opinion, some have expressed a desire to see Paul’s brand of Libertarianism injected into Trump’s populist anti-establishment movement.

Veteran Republican strategist and former Trump advisor Roger Stone last week suggested that Trump should make Paul head of the Federal Reserve if he wins the general election.

“That would be my first pick. But uh, you know, Donald Trump has a healthy respect for Ron Paul, based on his own statements,” Stone said, adding “Trump has come out in favor of the, auditing The Fed,” an issue that Paul pushed for for many years.

It appears that Neocon Republicans are also very much afraid of what would happen, should Ron Paul’s brand of conservatism be adopted by Trump.

Last week, neocon journalist Jennifer Rubin tweeted under the hashtag #thingstoworryabout. that she fears a situation in which Ron Paul will be selected as Secretary of State for a Trump administration.
