Federal prosecutors are bringing espionage charges against a National Security Agency (NSA) contractor accused of stealing a massive trove of sensitive information.

Harold T. Martin III will be charged under the Espionage Act, according to a 12-page memo filed Thursday by prosecutors, who urged the judge in the case not to grant Martin pretrial release.

Calling the theft “breathtaking in its longevity and scale,” prosecutors argue that “if he is released, he will have the ability to access and transmit any stolen classified information he may still have hidden or stored online.”

“The case against the Defendant thus far is overwhelming, and the investigation is ongoing. The Defendant knows, and, if no longer detained may have access to, a substantial amount of highly classified information, which he has flagrantly mishandled and could easily disseminate to others,” they argued.
