A United Nations report concerning threats to gender equality identifies “conservatism” as a major impediment yet completely downplays how the religion of Islam oppresses women all over the world.
U.N. Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka spoke on the issue during the opening session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York yesterday.
“Neither she, nor a major report prepared for the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meeting she was addressing in New York, identified radical Islamic ideology as a leading factor, although surveys have found Muslim nations fare worst in gender equality rankings,” writes Patrick Goodenough.
“Extremism and conservatism are on the rise, manifested in diverse forms across different contexts,” said the report, noting that such beliefs are instrumental in “tolerating or even promoting violence against women and limiting women’s and girls’ autonomy and engagement in the public sphere.”
Although the report touches on examples of oppression that are almost universally confined to the Islamic faith, it fails to explicitly characterize the religion as an obstacle to women’s rights.
As Goodenough documents, the implementation of Sharia law and other Islamic tenets means that Islamic nations completely dominate rankings of countries where women face the worst oppression.
– According to the World Economic Forum’s “Global Gender Gap” report, 19 of the 20 countries with the lowest scores were Islamic majority countries. Yemen, which has a Muslim population of 99%, was ranked the worst.
– Islamic countries are also disproportionately represented when it comes to the problem of female genital mutilation (FGM), with FMG rates being the highest (98 per cent) in Somalia, where 98.6% of the population is Muslim. The other countries include Djibouti (93), Egypt (91), Guinea (96), Mali (89), Eritrea (89), Sierra Leone (88) and Sudan (88), all of which have significant majority Muslim populations aside from Eritrea.
– Four of the top five countries with the highest rates of under-18 marriages are also members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the bloc of Muslim-majority nations.
– The report also failed to mention the rape epidemic sweeping Europe, which is primarily being driven by Muslim immigrants who see women as second class citizens.
The report once again highlights the stunning hypocrisy of global institutions and feminist organizations, who continually castigate the western “patriarchy” for oppressing women while completely ignoring actual oppression of women in Islamic countries simply to avoid being labeled politically incorrect.
Hillary Clinton is also set to speak before the UN today on the issue, which is ironic given that her foundation is simultaneously pushing the “wage gap” myth while paying its own senior male executives 37 per cent more than their female counterparts.
