Obama’s war against the Islamic State has expanded from Syria and Iraq into Libya.
Senior administration officials have told The Daily Beast F-15 aircraft carried out an airstrike against an ISIS target in the north African country on Friday.
“While it is believed that the intended target was killed, the U.S. military is unable to confirm yet whether he is dead,” the website reported on Saturday.
Few other details are currently available.
Libya descended into chaos after the United States and NATO attacked in 2011 and U.S.-supported rebels killed the country’s leader, Muammar Gaddafi. 30,000 people were killed and 50,000 wounded during the six month war.
ISIS claims it is now operating from Libya.
It was reported the terror army plans to send terrorists into Europe along with thousands of people fleeing the failed state.
On Friday, ISIS claimed responsibility for a terror attack in Paris that killed around 120 people.
U.S. Base in Tunisia
In July it was rumored Libya’s neighbor Tunisia has agreed to host a U.S. military base.
On July 22 the Arabic language newspaper al-Arab reported the African country began receiving surveillance systems in preparation for the establishment of a new military station in the northwestern coastal city of Haouaria.
It was reported the base will operate as a substitute for the Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Niscemi (NRTF Niscemi), a telecommunications station based in Niscemi, Italy. The U.S. planned to install the Navy’s Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), a next-generation narrowband tactical satellite communications system, but this was put on hold after residents protested. MUOS also aids drone piloting.
“A U.S. drone campaign against ISIL in Libya might thus diminish ISIL’s ability to plan attacks against U.S. or other allied countries, as well as weakening them as contestants for power in Libya itself—even if such a limited campaign cannot defeat ISIL outright,” Maj. James Brindle, a Pentagon spokesman, told Al Arabiya News.
