The Obama administration released documents on the government’s collection of millions of U.S. phone records, including a secret court order that authorized and set limits for the program.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence released today the previously classified April 25 court document, along with briefing papers given earlier to Congress that described the program’s use.
“We welcome a public debate about how best to safeguard both our national security and the privacy of our citizens,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole said in testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee today. “We will be considering in the coming days and weeks further steps to declassify information and help facilitate that debate.”
