Donald Trump said he was “flabbergasted” by Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s private meeting with Bill Clinton and initially thought that the story was so outrageous it had to be a joke.
Lynch, who as Attorney General is presiding over the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, met with Lynch on her private plane on the tarmac of the Phoenix airport Monday. Lynch later claimed that the two innocently chatted about golf and grandchildren.
During an appearance on Sean Hannity’s show, Trump refused to be drawn on whether Lynch should recuse herself from the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email scandal, but said he was shocked when he learned of the meeting.
“When I first heard that yesterday afternoon I actually thought that they were joking,” said Trump.
“I said no way, there’s just no way that’s gonna happen and it happened and I’m flabbergasted by it, I think it’s amazing, I’ve never seen anything like that before,” added the presumptive Republican nominee.
Just two days after the meeting, the Department of Justice filed a motion in federal court seeking to prevent the release of email correspondence between Hillary Clinton’s top aides and Teneo Holdings, a public relations firm that Bill Clinton helped launch, until October 2018.
Political analyst Carl Bernstein echoed Trump’s sentiments during an appearance on CNN and called for Lynch to step aside.
“This plays right into Trump’s hand, but the terrible thing is the incredible lapse in judgment by both the attorney general and Bill Clinton,” said Bernstein. “It’s inexplicable, it’s wrong, it’s improper, and she needs, the attorney general, to now recuse herself from overseeing this investigation and turn it over to the deputy attorney general in charge of the Criminal Division. It’s unthinkable that she can go on being in charge of this investigation.”
Meanwhile, segments of the mainstream media continue to downplay the scandal, with CBS This Morning host Charlie Rose remarking that the get together “seems on the face of it simply to be an innocent meeting of two politicians saying hello.”
