On Nov. 9, President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping said they would cooperate to curb the flow of synthetic drugs from China into the United States, with a strong focus on the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl. If the Chinese regime follows through on the agreement, it would end what has been characterized as a decades-long war waged by China against the United States.
Synthetic opioids that can be ordered online often originate in China and have become the most deadly drug group in the United States. Synthetic opioids were involved in some 20,000 overdose deaths last year. Among the most serious is fentanyl, which is 50 times stronger than heroin and is often mixed with other drugs without the user’s knowledge.
In a joint statement with Xi, Trump said, “Every year, drug trafficking destroys millions and millions of lives.” He and Xi “discussed ways we can enhance coordination to better counter the deadly drug trade and to stop the lethal flow of poisonous drugs into our countries and into our communities.”
