BAGHDAD – A series of bombings struck mainly Shiite areas of Baghdad and a western province on Friday, killing at least 69 people and demonstrating a resilient insurgency after the recent killing or capture of several militant leaders.
There were no immediate claims of responsibility, but the coordinated bombings bore the hallmarks of the Sunni insurgent group al-Qaeda in Iraq.
Friday’s attacks came a week after a U.S.-Iraqi operation against al-Qaeda in Iraq that killed two of the group’s top leaders, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri.
On Wednesday, U.S. military officials said the organization’s top official in the northern city of Mosul, Ahmad Ali Abbas Dahir al-Ubayd, had been killed in a raid.
