The behemoth spending package that sailed through Congress Friday allocates more than $1.6 billion for refugee resettlement programs, including funding for immigrants illegally crossing the United States’ southern border.
Lawmakers set aside the funds in the $1.1 trillion omnibus bill to assist with “refugee and entrant assistance activities” through 2018.
The Washington Free Beacon reported Thursday that the allocation provides $1.65 billion to “resettle illegal immigrants arriving at the U.S. border,” but an expert at The Heritage Foundation said the reality is more nuanced.
David Inserra, a policy analyst in homeland security at Heritage, said while a portion of the funding will be dedicated to resettling illegal immigrants, the majority of the taxpayer dollars would funnel into the Office of Refugee and Resettlement’s general assistance with refugees and human trafficking.
