FERGUSON, Mo. (AP/ KMOV) — Police said they fired multiple smoke canisters and at least one tear gas canister into a crowd of defiant protesters who gathered in Ferguson early Sunday as they responded to get to the scene of a reported shooting.
Captain Ron Johnson with the Missouri Highway Patrol said there was a shooting near the intersection of Canfield Drive and West Florissant. He said one protester shot another. The victim was listed in critical condition.
Johnson said seven people were arrested from the roof of the Red’s BBQ restaurant on West Florissant.
Remaining protesters — chanting “No justice! No curfew!” — refused to leave the area. As five armored tactical vehicles approached the crowd, officers spoke through a loudspeaker: “You are in violation of a state-imposed curfew. You must disperse immediately. Failure to comply, may result in arrest.”
