U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has won re-election to a sixth term in the U.S. Senate.

The Associated Press called the race for McConnell about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes tried to unseat McConnell, who as Senate minority leader, is arguably the most powerful Republican in Washington because of his ability to thwart action on President Obama’s agenda. With his win Tuesday, he is likely to take over as the Senate majority leader if Republicans can take control of the Senate.
