Mark Stephens, the British attorney representing Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, says a secret grand jury is meeting in Alexandria, Virginia, in response to the release of more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables by Wikileaks.
Stephens made the claim during an interview with David Frost. Mr. Stephens cited Swedish authorities as the source of his information.
Grand juries are empaneled to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial and if indictments should be issued.
Stephens also said that if Assange is sent from Britain to Sweden, the Swedish government will defer to the Americans.

In other words, it is likely Assange would be extradited to the United States to stand trial for espionage or other crimes. The move by the Swedes, said Stephens, reveals “collusion and embarrassment.”
Assange was arrested on December 7 in London on an extradition warrant from Sweden, where prosecutors want to question him on sexual assault claims.
MasterCard and Visa refused to allow Assange supporters to use their services to raise the bail required to free him from a British jail. Supporters are attempting to raise cash instead.
“What we are seeing here is the Swedish prosecutor who took on this case has not decided to charge him with any offenses but is seeking a further interview,” Stephens told City of Westminster Magistrates Court.
Last week it was reported that the woman who made the rape claim had fled Sweden and was no longer cooperating with authorities.
