The Trump administration has reportedly chosen the wife of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to be the next ambassador to the Vatican, according to White House officials.

Trump will nominate Callista Gingrich for the post, which comes before Trump’s foreign trip this month which includes a visit to the Vatican.

Gingrich has been under consideration for the position for several months and has just been approved by the Office of Government Ethics, reports CNN.

Newt Gingrich said that Callista was being considered for the position shortly after the inauguration took place.

“She’s under consideration,” Gingrich said, adding that he would be “very excited for her” if she were offered the position.

Callista Gingrich, the former Speaker’s third wife and a devout Catholic, is also president of Gingrich Productions, a media company that produced numerous documentaries including one in 2010 about Pope John Paul II called Nine Days that Changed the World.

For almost two decades, Gingrich has performed weekly in the choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C., and has even told the Christian Broadcasting network in 2011 that she has “always been a very spiritual person.”

She even influenced her husband to convert to Catholicism in 2009.

Trump’s decision to pick Gingrich suggests he seeks to strike a conciliatory tone with the globalist Pope Francis, who has opposed Trump’s populism, claimed that Islamic terrorism doesn’t exist, and even compared Trump’s rise to power to that of Hitler’s.

“Hitler did not steal power,” the Pope said. “He was elected by his people and then he destroyed his people.”

Trump’s first foreign tour will begin Friday, where he will visit Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Europe, and will meet with Pope Francis in Rome on May 24.
