Some 60 percent of US citizens support a third political party “because the Republican and Democratic parties do such a poor job of representing the American people,” Gallup said.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents said that the current US political parties do an “adequate job.”

Meanwhile, the survey also found that 78 percent of Independents, 47 percent of Democrats and 45 percent of Republicans support the creation of a third major political party.

“The lack of major third party candidates in recent years in part reflects the difficulty such candidates have in obtaining ballot access in the 50 states, securing a place in the debates and raising sufficient funds outside of the traditional two-party system,” Gallup said.

Gallup explained that US respondents have been “warm” to the idea of a third party for nearly a decade.
