A new Rasmussen poll has found that 1 in 5 Democrats agree with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo that ‘America was never great’.

While the survey revealed that a majority of voters across the political spectrum disagree with the comments, it highlighted the fact that a sizable portion of Democrats do not share a view that America is or was ever ‘great’.

Last week, Cuomo, who is eying a Presidential run in 2020 said at a news gathering that “We’re not going to make America great again. It was never that great.”

According to the Rasmussen poll, a majority of 67% of likely voters disagreed with statement, while 17 percent agreed and 16 percent were undecided.

The telling figures came when splitting the respondents along party lines.

While only a tiny fraction of Republicans agree America isn’t great, 20% of Democrats do think that.

The comments riled many Americans, including the President, who suggested that Cuomo was having a meltdown.

Trump declared that Cuomo’s political career is over:

Cuomo responded by insinuating Trump wanted the KKK to make a come back:

After the backlash, Cuomo backpedaled and described his comments as “inartful.”

Speaking to The Associated Press, he said “Of course America is great and of course America has always been great.”
