All indications coming from the Paul family suggest that there will be another Paul in the running for President when campaigning gears up again. In an MSNBC appearance this morning, Ron Paul suggested that he believes his son, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will mount a bid. Rand Paul’s mother Carol also echoed the sentiments.
“I would think so, he wouldn’t be doing what he’s doing, but I haven’t had a conversation of what the plan is,” Ron Paul said on the Morning Joe programme. “He’s been pretty independent.”
“I think if you look at where’s he’s traveling, which states he’s going to, I would think it’s on his mind, but I haven’t had any personal conversations,” said the former Texas congressman.
“I would think that he’s weighing it and it depends on the circumstances. Sometimes in politics you get beat up all of a sudden,” he said. “But I think he’s weighing it. I think he’s doing a very good job.” Paul added.
In a profile on the Paul family in Vogue magazine, published Wednesday, Rand Paul’s mother, and Ron Paul’s wife Carol said she thinks the prospect of a Rand White House campaign in 2016 “feels real,” while cautioning that there is still work to be done.
“Ron thinks it’s terribly early to be starting a campaign,” Carol Paul said of her husband, “Rand says he won’t declare that he’s going to run until after 2014… . Groundwork has to be set.”
Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) wife, Kelley, was more cautious, noting that she feared possible reprisals against her family, should her husband opt to run.
“Because in this day and age it’s mostly about character assassination,” she said. “When I think of the tens of millions of dollars in opposition research that they’d be aiming right at us and our family — that’s what it’s about.”
Kelley Paul has been labeled Rand’s secret weapon, having worked closely on GOP Sen. Ted Cruz’s successful campaign, as well as serving on the board of Helping a Hero, a charity that builds houses for wounded war veterans. The Vogue piece suggests that this will enable Paul to solidify his anti-war stance and win the support of veterans and serving military men and women.
Rand Paul himself told Fox News in August that he’s considering a run, but wouldn’t make a decision for “probably a year.” He also notes in the latest piece that he has a “gut feeling” that Hillary Clinton will not run, despite constant speculation that she is being primed by the Washington elite.
“All the polls show her trouncing any opponents,” Paul said, adding that it would enhance Republican chances if Clinton were not in the frame.
The piece also reveals that longtime Democratic strategist James Carville believes that should Rand Paul run, “he’ll be considered a first-tier candidate.”
