President Obama took a verbal swipe at his detractors in a speech Wednesday, saying that ‘anti-government’ Americans would soon discover that they want ‘a good government’ like the Obama administration if they visited a country where government ‘doesn’t work’.
“I always tell people who are anti-government who are here in the United States, try going to a country where the government doesn’t work,” Obama said.
“You’ll see that you actually want a good government.” the incumbent president added.
“It’s a useful thing to have, but it’s not enough on its own if you also don’t have then the ability of people in the private sector to support.” he further stated.
Obama was speaking at a Young African Leaders Initiative in Washington, D.C.
He suggested that many Americans are too reluctant to pay taxes to upkeep infrastructure and invest in universities.
“Our big problem here in this country is sometimes we forget how we became so wealthy in the first place. And you start hearing arguments about, ‘Oh, we don’t want to pay taxes to fund the universities,’ or, ‘We don’t want to pay taxes to maintain our roads properly, because why should I have to invest in society? I made it on my own,'” Obama said.
“And we forget that the reason you had this opportunity to go work at Google or to go work at General Motors or to go work at IBM had to do with a lot of investments that were made in science and research and roads and courts and all the infrastructure that helps preserve the ability of people who want to operative effectively in the marketplace to be able to make it.” Obama declared.
Obama’s comments were reminiscent of his 2012 “You didn’t build that” speech, in which he suggested that Americans owed their own personal success in life and business to public infrastructure and government spending.
At the time, the comments were broadly viewed by many Americans as an attack on entrepreneurs and the free market.
In a recent Gallup poll, it was revealed that more than 60 percent of Americans are unhappy with the US “system of government and how well it works”.
A further Pew study also found that just one fifth of Americans have trust in the federal government to do the right thing “most of the time”.
Of course, Obama didn’t mention the fact that many Americans are sick and tired of their taxes being used to fund US involvement in foreign conflict.
Neither did he mention that Americans are reluctant to pay taxes toward infrastructure improvement, particularly when those improvements are taking place in Iran, for instance.
And that is assuming that the Iranian government uses a recently acquired $400 million in American taxpayer funds to improve infrastructure, as the White House claims it will, rather than directly fund terrorist organizations, which the State Department says it cannot actually rule out.
If you’re not too happy with the way this whole thing panned out, perhaps you should go to a country where government doesn’t work.
