North Korea threatened South Korea with a nuclear “sacred war” on Thursday.

“To counter the enemy’s intentional drive to push the situation to the brink of war, our revolutionary forces are making preparations to begin a sacred war at any moment necessary based on nuclear deterrent,” said North Korean Minister of Armed Forces Kim Yong Chun in the country’s central news agency, according to Reuters.

Tensions between the Koreas have threatened to escalate following the shelling of a South Korean island by the North last month. In response to the shelling, South Korea is holding large-scale military exercises in the region.
