UNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) – Crowds gathered on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border this weekend to call for an end to the drug-related violence that has claimed thousands of lives in the past few years.

More than 300 people gathered Saturday along the U.S. side of a border fence separating Sunland Park from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, to show solidarity with the Mexican city that has been ravaged by drug-related violence. At the same time, about 150 people gathered on the Mexican side.

More than 34,600 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since Mexican President Felipe Calderon began a campaign against drug cartels starting in 2007. It cost the lives of more than 3,100 people in Juarez and surrounding areas last year. Juarez has recorded more than 180 slayings in January.
