Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu told U.S. vice president Joe Biden on Sunday only a “credible military threat can deter Iran from building a nuclear weapon,” according to Reuters. Sources in Israel report growing impatience with economic sanctions imposed on Iran, described by the Israelis as diplomacy. Netanyahu pulled Biden aside at the American Jewish conference in New Orleans.

	Israel is the first country outside of the United States to receive the advanced GBU-39 with the blessing of the U.S. Congress in late 2008.

Both will address the conference and also discus Israeli-Palestinian peace talks that are now predictably suspended in a dispute over Israeli’s continued building of settlements in the West Bank. A 10-month moratorium on settlement construction in the West Bank expired in late September.

Netanyahu plans to visit New York and tell U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that Israel rejects any unilateral Palestinian statehood moves at the U.N.

Netanyahu made the comment several days after Israel received its first shipment of GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) from the United States. The SDB is a guided bomb that is intended to provide aircraft with the ability to carry a higher number of bombs.

“The only way to ensure that Iran will not go nuclear is to create a credible threat of military action against it if it doesn’t cease its race for a nuclear weapon,” one of the sources said Netanyahu told Biden. “The economic sanctions are making it difficult for Iran, but there is no sign that the Ayatollah regime plans to stop its nuclear program because of them.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency, Russia, the CIA, and others have repeatedly concluded that Iran does not possess nuclear weapons or is there credible evidence the Islamic nation is engaged in a nuclear weapons program.

Earlier this year, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Israel is not a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and pointed out that the United States is the only country to have used a nuclear weapon during wartime. Under the NPT, Iran is permitted to develop nuclear energy. Israel is estimated to have around 400 nuclear weapons.

“We continue to seek a peaceful resolution and to hope Iranian leaders will reconsider their current destructive and debilitating course,” Biden told the influential Jewish Federation of North America. “But let me be very clear about this: We are also absolutely committed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”

Iran has agreed to resume nuclear talks with six world powers after November 10 and has set the stage for another international effort to pressure it to abandon its legal energy uranium enrichment program.

Netanyahu’s frustration over the fact the U.S. has not bombed Iran was underscored on Monday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Gates said that the threat of force was not the only way to deter Iran from pursuing its nuclear program. The comments were seen as a rejection of Netanyahu’s statement yesterday that Iran could only be deterred from making nuclear weapons by the threat of military force, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

“Some speculate that Netanyahu, a shrewd veteran politician with a keen nose for shifting political winds, chose this critical moment in Obama’s struggling political career to press for ‘a military threat’ against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” writes RT today.
