Less than 24 hours after Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu gave his speech to Congress warning of the threat posed by Iran, the Israeli navy said it seized a shipment of rockets in the Red Sea en route to Gaza from Iran.

IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said the ship was flying under the Panama flag and contained Syrian M-302 rockets.

In March, 2014 Israel said it intercepted an Iranian arms ship destined for Gaza, including 40 M-302 rockets which have the range of around 100 miles.

Israel says Hamas has used the Syrian made rockets in attacks on greater Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The rocket design is said to be based on the Chinese WS-1B.

The WS-1B was designed to be used against targets deep behind enemy lines including military bases, massed armored divisions, missile launch sites, airports and airstrips, harbors and military industrial bases.

“We understand that there are several other tens of these rockets within the Gaza Strip, that can potentially reach that long distance,” Lerner said.
