Nearly 500 peace demonstrators were arrested on Sunday when they attempted to storm NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

The demo was called by the Belgian Association Action for Peace to protest NATO intervention in Afghanistan and Libya and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Most of the demonstrators were from Britain, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden.

“A military alliance that intervenes all over the world and has nuclear weapons is a threat to world peace,” Action for Peace said.

“We neither want the anti-missile shield, nor intervention by NATO in Libya or Afghanistan, nor nuclear bombs that are illegal in our country,” a spokesman for Action for Peace, Benoit Calvi, told Press TV.

The protest against the invasions of Afghanistan and Libya, the symbolic storming of NATO headquarters and the mass arrests that followed were virtually ignored by the establishment media in the United States.

NATO’s Libyan attack is “a model intervention” that will likely be used in Syria, according to the U.S. ambassador to NATO, Ivo Daalder, and NATO’s top military commander, U.S. Admiral James Stavridis.

Daalder and Stavridis recently took to the pages of Foreign Affairs to praise the “model” that led to the death of 30,000 Libyans. Foreign Affairs is the house organ of the Council on Foreign Relations, a top globalist operation. U.S. Department of State boss Hillary Clinton has stated that she often sojourns to the CFR for “advice.”

The protest at NATO headquarters came a month before a NATO meeting in Chicago. Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel’s NATO Host Committee raised $36.5 million for security, most of it donated by corporations such as JP Morgan, McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Honeywell, and Boeing. The federal government has pledged an additional $19.1 million to militarize the city next month.

In February, the Chicago city council expanded powers given to Emanuel for the May NATO and G8 summits, including the authority to accept contracts for goods or services without approval.

In March, the Emanuel administration demonstrated its contempt for the First Amendment by denying protest march permits. Also in March, Chicago police arrested journalists and told them their First Amendment right can be “terminated.”
