The Royal Navy has lined up 49 warships with pinpoint precision during a major Nato exercise in the Baltic Sea.

The ships from 17 nations were less than 200 yards apart at times as they moved through a series of complex formations that tested their communications and navigational expertise.

Among the vessels taking part in the exercise were amphibious landing platforms, destroyers, frigates and mine-hunters.

Coordinating the audacious operation was HMS Ocean’s Specialist Navigating Officer Lieutenant Commander George Storton.
