Despite surveillance footage showing journalist Michael Hastings’ car suffering several explosions before it came to a stop, his wife Elise Jordan labeled the incident a “tragic accident” during an appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight.
Host Piers Morgan labeled the notion that Hastings was chasing a hot story before his death as a “wild conspiracy theory,” despite Jordan herself admitting that the Rolling Stone journalist “always had at least five hot stories going.”
However, despite initially vowing to “take down” whoever was responsible for her husband’s death, Jordan struck a different tone last night on CNN.
“My gut here is that it was just a really tragic accident and I’m unlucky in the world, the world was very unlucky,” Jordan remarked.
Hastings sent out an email to friends and colleagues 15 hours before his car crash stating he was “onto a big story” and needed “to go off the rada[r] for a bit.”
Jordan also stated that the LAPD is still conducting an “active investigation” into the crash despite them ruling out foul play within days of the incident and stonewalling journalists who have attempted to obtain information about what happened.
If Hastings’ death was a simple accident as Jordan asserts then it’s unclear why police and firefighters in the area have had a gag order imposed on them and been told not to talk to the media about the incident.
Such an explanation also fails to answer why the FBI is refusing to release information on Hastings despite a Freedom of Information Act request. After Wikileaks reported that Hastings had contacted them a few hours before his death complaining that he was under FBI investigation, other friends confirmed that the journalist was “very paranoid” about the feds watching him.
Recently released surveillance camera footage which captures the crash of Hastings’ Mercedes shows three explosions before the vehicle comes to a rest, fueling speculation that some kind of incendiary device could have triggered the blasts. In at least three 911 calls, witnesses reported loud explosions accompanying the crash.
The car’s engine was found 150 feet from the vehicle and there were no skid marks on the road, indicating that Hastings, who friends say hadn’t drunk alcohol in five years, was unable to control the vehicle.
Former counter-terror czar Richard Clarke reacted to the news by telling the Huffington Post that the fatal crash was “consistent with a car cyber attack.” Academic studies show that it is relatively easy to hack and remote control a modern day vehicle.
Hastings had made numerous enemies in high places as a result of his hard hitting journalism and his friend Sgt. Joe Biggs said that the journalist was working on “the biggest story yet” about the CIA before his death.
