Angela Merkel has compared NSA surveillance of her cell phone to Stasi surveillance of East German citizens.

Good and well. Except for one thing. German intelligence had no problem using NSA programs like XKeyScore to “expand their ability to support NSA as we jointly prosecute CT (counterterrorism) targets,” Spiegel Online reported back in July.

In other words, it is an outrage when American intelligence spies on Merkel’s phone, but okay when German spooks do the same to their citizens.

The excuse, of course, is terrorism. According to government, citizens are to be considered terrorists — or harbor ill-will toward the prevailing political establishment, which is the same thing to them — but when the state wantonly violates the rights of millions of innocent people it is not terrorism.
