The Louisiana cops who fatally shot Alton Sterling said the butt of his handgun was visible in his front pocket and he was reaching for it when they opened fire, according to court documents filed Monday.

The two officers who killed Sterling offered their version of events in an affidavit submitted by the Baton Rouge Police Department as part of a search warrant for surveillance video from the Triple S Food Mart, according to The Advocate newspaper.

Sterling, 37, refused to put his hands on the hood of a car at the convenience store at about 12:30 a.m. on July 5, the cops said.
