When Mitt Romney holds a town hall meeting in Maine tomorrow night, the center of the political universe will suddenly shift to a state that has been holding GOP caucuses for the past week.
The winner of Maine’s presidential straw poll and Republican caucuses will be announced Saturday. The race is seen as a two-man contest between Romney, who easily won the Maine caucuses four years ago, and Ron Paul.
“Romney needs to reassert himself,” Anthony Corrado, a government professor at Colby College, told USA TODAY. “This is not only about stemming the public perception that his campaign has lost momentum, it’s also an effort to reassert claims about his electability and the strength of his ability to challenge President Obama.”
Paul, the Texas congressman, will return to Maine on Saturday. He drew large crowds during his Maine campaign appearances last month, and his audiences included many college students attracted to his anti-war message.
