Raf Sanchez, writing for The Telegraph, suggests ISIS terror in the United States will be a victory for the anti-gun lobby.
He believes the debate will not change until the Second Amendment is destroyed by the national security state.
“One possibility is that guns become a regular tool for Isil-inspired terrorists, moving the argument away from America’s sacrosanct ‘right to bear arms’ and towards a more urgent discussion about national security,” writes Sanchez.
An ISIS attack on the scale of Newtown “carried out by a self-proclaimed jihadist instead of a disturbed young white man” would flip consensus in Washington and lead to draconian antigun legislation.
If gun massacres committed by jihadists became as common as gun massacres committed by “lone white males” (as the seemingly-motiveless gunmen of the Newtown and Colorado-variety are often called) then the debate might change. Limiting access to guns might be seen as a common sense way to stop terrorists instead of an assault on Americans’ fundamental rights.
So far the tactic has failed. Try as it might the FBI was unable to establish a link between the lone wolf Chattanooga shooter Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez and ISIS or any other terrorist organization outside the United States.
The corporate media insisted Abdulazeez was inspired by Anwar al-Awlaki but the larger argument that jihadists and ISIS terrorists are carrying out shootings has failed to gain traction.
An earlier effort to pin the blame on ISIS for a foiled attack on an art exhibit in Garland, Texas lampooning the the Prophet Mohammad also failed to pan out.
Although ISIS allegedly took to social media and claimed responsibility for the incident, authorities were unable to establish a link between the perpetrators and the Islamic State.
“ISIS provided no evidence to support its claim after the shooting on Sunday at a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest,” NBC reported. “But experts told NBC News that accepting responsibility was a cheap way for the militants to achieve their terrorist goals.”
Despite the inability of ISIS to launch terror attacks inside the United States, the Obama administration and the Department of Homeland Security warn of lone wolf attacks at any time.
“We’re very definitely in a new phase in the global terrorist threat, where the so-called lone wolf could strike at any moment,” Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson warned in May.
Wishful thinking on the part of anti-Second Amendment activists that lone wolf ISIS attacks will motivate Congress to introduce and pass gun legislation remains at best a fantasy.
Politicians fear the wrath of voters on key issues such as the right to own and bear arms.
In December the Pew Research Center established a clear majority of Americans support the Second Amendment.
“For the first time in more than two decades of Pew Research Center surveys, there is more support for gun rights than gun control. Currently, 52% say it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns, while 46% say it is more important to control gun ownership,” the organization reported.
“Across many demographic and political groups, opinion has moved in the direction of greater support for gun rights since January 2013,” a month after the Newtown shooting and a concerted effort by Obama and congressional Democrats to ram through anti-gun legislation.
