Nearly 90 Christians from Eritrea are feared to have been kidnapped by Islamic State militants as they tried to make the journey to Europe through war-ravaged Libya.

The migrants, including at least 12 women and several children, were abducted in a dawn raid on a smugglers’ truck southwest of Tripoli, according to Meron Estefanos, an Eritrean human rights activist.

Only nine escaped: six Muslims who were released by the assailants and three Christians who managed to jump out of the vehicles and are now lost in the desert, according to Ms Estefanos.
