Developing story in Turkey as a coup is taking place in an attempt to get rid of President Erdogan.
Turkish troops stormed the capital of Anarka with tanks, jets and helicopters in an attempt to overthrow the Islamist government.
The military officially claimed control of the country after explosions and gunfire were heard throughout the area.
President Erdogan – who is believed to be seeking asylum in Europe from his airplane – urged citizens to take to the streets.
Early reports claim that Erdogan was denied asylum in Germany and was instead headed to London.
A live stream from Sky News – who is reporting in favor of NATO ally and ISIS supporter Erdogan – shows the situation on the ground as Islamists clash with military personnel.
Tanks reportedly opened fire on the Turkish Parliament building during the overthrow. Reports also indicate that citizens were placed under a curfew and blocked from accessing several social media websites once the coup began.
The military says the actions will “reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.”
Pro-Erdogan citizens have been seen clashing with military while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
