See IRS awards $4.5M to whistleblower

The IRS awarded 4.5 million to an in house accountant that warned a company about a tax lapse in filing. the company ignored him. This led to him to informing the IRS. They have a whistleblowers reward for large companies trying to cheat the government. This led to a 20 million dollars that the company had to pay the government.

The whistleblower program only promises awards for returns of $2 million or more.

“This law is not designed to snag the guppies, but to harpoon the whales,” said Patrick Burns, president of Taxpayers Against Fraud, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit whose members include many lawyers for whistleblowers.
