A Texas family whose loved one was lost in a tragic hit and run accident is disappointed with what they feel is an inadequate punishment meted out to their family member’s killer – an illegal alien from Mexico.
On the morning of March 15, Dallas resident David Benton, 55, was crossing the street in his neighborhood when a car struck him dead.
The man behind the wheel, 22-year-old Mexican national Angel Lopez-Gil, continued driving with Benton on the hood of the vehicle, only stopping at an apartment complex to dump the man’s body.
From there, Lopez-Gil fled on foot and was eventually caught.
Speaking exlusively to Infowars, Benton’s sister, Deborah, says Lopez-Gil had removed his bloodied shirt prior to being caught and that he confessed to officers he had been drinking that night.
“Lopez-Gil hit my brother traveling 65-70 mph” in a 45 mph zone, Deborah said. “David’s legs were severed on impact, his body went through the windshield.”
“[Lopez-Gil] was arrested at gunpoint while trying to climb over a fence,” she described. “The Dallas Police Department did not perform a blood test, even though the officer placing Angel in the paddy wagon stated, under oath, Angel reeked of alcohol.”
“While being interrogated, Angel admitted to drinking tequila and beer all night long,” she added.
Lopez-Gil was subsequently charged with Accident Involving Death, a second degree felony, not fleeing the scene of an accident or driving under the influence.
Last Thursday, a jury ruled him guilty on the one charge, sentencing him to 10 years probation with possible immediate deportation, according to Deborah. If he finds his way back to the US and is caught, he could face 10 years in prison.
Benton’s family is upset David’s killer is essentially being allowed to get away scot-free.
“All I know is my son’s dead and he goes free, and that hurts,” David’s father Don told WFAA.
The family’s plight hits at the core of a key discussion being had on the federal level regarding illegal immigration.
On one hand, the Obama administration is exacerbating the influx by bending over backwards to accommodate illegals with free handouts and promises to reunite them with families already in the US.
On the other, Americans are struggling to cope with criminal immigrants, who – like Lopez-Gil – tend to receive lesser sentencing or deportation, effectively allowing them to get away with various misdeeds or come back to commit more.
