A Mexican national in the US illegally will serve 35 years in prison after being found guilty of killing a New Jersey woman and attempting to incinerate her body.
Mexican citizen Juan Jimenez-Olivera, 30, was sentenced this week on various counts related to the murder of Sviatlana Dranko, a 30-year-old Hillsborough Township woman who worked alongside her soon-to-be assailant at a pizza joint.
Jimenez-Olivera entered a guilty plea in August to the April 29, 2014 slaying, in which he admitted to strangling Dranko inside her home by putting a pillow case over her face, sexually assaulting her and also lighting her bedsheets and couch on fire, engulfing her home in flames.
Jimenez-Olivera also admitted to stealing $6,000 from Dranko, in addition to lying to police about his involvement.
The illegal alien pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated arson, desecrating human remains, theft, hindering apprehension and evidence tampering. He also admitted to a judge that he was in the country illegally.
A plea agreement dismissed a charge of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, in exchange for a 30-year consecutive sentence with no possibility of parole. Five years were also added to Jimenez-Olivarez’s sentence for desecrating human remains.
NewJersey.com reports that “If Jimenez-Olivera, who is represented by public defender Lauren Bayer, had been found guilty on all counts, he was facing a maximum of 126.5 years in prison.”
“His $1 million bail was revoked and he remains in the Somerset County Jail,” NewJersey.com notes.
Crimes committed by illegal immigrants in the US have come under scrutiny since billionaire presidential candidate Donald Trump began calling attention to criminal elements crossing the southern border, specifically highlighting the murder of Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman killed in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
