A task force led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 24 members of the Sinaloa cartel Friday who worked around Sonoyta, Mexico, which sits near the border town of Lukeville, Arizona, according to an ICE spokeswoman.
Dubbed Mexican Operation Diablo Express, the task force consisted of agencies including the DEA, FBI, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Scottsdale police and the Mexican government, according to ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen.
The operation targeted “high level members of the Sinaloa cartel,” which has been responsible for the illegal importation of “millions of pounds of illegal drugs,” Christensen said.
Another recent high-profile Sinaloa cartel arrest was of Joaquin Guzman, also known as El Chapo. His interview with Sean Penn for Rolling Stone magazine helped lead to his subsequent arrest.
