A former Pacific Grove police commander was sentenced Tuesday to 2½ years in prison for extortion and wire fraud.

John Nyunt, 51, pleaded guilty to the charges in May 2014, and pleaded guilty that December to possession of stolen firearms.

“The case involves Nyunt’s abuse of his position with the police department and his attempts to profit illegally from his position of authority,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
