Yesterday, South Carolina’s governor Nikki Haley excitedly tweeted about the Christmas gift her husband got her – a Beretta PX4 Storm.

The tweet wasn’t greeted with holiday cheer. Rather, gun-fearing Twitter users wished ill will on Haley, with one suggesting she use the pistol to shoot herself.

“Please God, use it on yourself. Like before New Years,” one user responded.

Another person “hoped” Haley doesn’t “accidentally shoot someone” in her family, then admitted that scenario wouldn’t particularly phase him.

Others claimed Haley’s tweet “promoted murder” and that she was gifted “an agent of death.” Of course, according to these folks, guns in the hands of police are “instruments of peace.”

So let’s try to sort this out. On the one hand, it’s fine for a gun proponent to use a gun, but only if it’s to shoot themselves. On the other, guns are bad because they kill people. Take a second to stop your head from spinning.

Purposely ignored, of course, are the countless instances in which members of the public have used guns to protect and defend homes and businesses from potentially deadly attackers. The website GunsSaveLives.net attempts to map out incidents in which guns have been used in self defense.

Additionally, a 1993 National Self-Defense Survey conducted by Dr. Gary Kleck, a Professor of Criminology at Florida State University, found that “defensive use of guns is pretty common and probably more common that criminal uses of guns.”

“Our results ended up indicating, depending on which figures you prefer to use, anywhere from 800,000 on up to 2.4, 2.5 million defensive uses of guns against human beings – not against animals – by civilians each year,” Kleck concluded.
