The story about the Granny from Macon, GA who thwarts two armed would-be robbers by using a gun is indeed a testament to why we need our 2nd Amendment rights protected. She was seen as an easy target and fortunately had the means to defend herself, but put in the same situation, could you have defended yourself?

When the economy dips, people are put in difficult financial situations. Being in a tight spot fiscally causes people to act out erratically, for instance, by trying to rob a bank, or in this case, hi-jack a vehicle. As the nation plunges deeper into economic dire straights, we can expect more of these types of crimes to be seen in the news. That being said, it’s my belief that every able American should own at least one firearm and, as evidenced by Ms. Campbell, should be prepared to use it (unlike this Virginia couple). If everyone is locked and loaded, crimes like car-jackings and break-ins will be things of the past.

Don’t get me wrong. Guns should not be obtained “by any means necessary.” The proper purchase procedure, including FBI criminal background check, should be employed. The last thing we need is more hardened criminals or convicts on the streets with guns.

Luckily in this story Ms. Campbell was able to stop her would-be assailants, but what if it was you? Would you be prepared to defend your vehicle? Do you even own a gun? When someone car-jacks you, you can explain that you would try and stop them, but you don’t believe in guns.

In some states they’ve passed a “Castle law” that extends a gun owner’s right to use deadly force in his vehicle as well as his home, without the need of a Concealed Handgun License. This is a variation of the “Stand-Your-Ground” law receiving national media attention over the Trayvon Martin issue. Check the laws in your state for the most accurate information, but in Texas you can carry in your vehicle as long as: you’re not engaged in criminal activity, prohibited by law from possessing a firearm, or a member of a criminal street gang.

If Matthew Owens of Mobile, AL, recently beaten on his own front porch by a mob, had answered his front door with a gun, his situation may have turned out differently.

The Founding Fathers and framers of our constitution knew the importance of firearms all too well. Just look at this quote from none other than George Washington himself:

Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.

– George Washington, First President of the United States

We need to come together as a nation, flood gun shows or your local sporting goods stores, and buy all the artillery we can, while we still can. Boots and thugs will think twice before knocking down a door if they know everyone owns firearms.
