A report in the respected Russian daily Kommersant, which did not identify its source, said Russian officials had been told the colonel was ready to step down.
‘(Gaddafi) is sending signals that he is prepared to relinquish power in exchange for security guarantees,’ the paper quoted what it called a high-level source in the Russian leadership as saying.
Kommersant’s source said that other nations, potentially including France, were willing to provide those guarantees.
